Prince Harry and Meghan Markle issued a statement earlier today, admitting they were “speechless” over the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. Outspoken broadcaster Piers Morgan couldn’t resist the opportunity to take aim at the pair on social media.

Piers took to Twitter to react to the news in view of his 7.9 million followers.

He responded to a tweet that read: “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle break silence on Afghanistan to say they are ‘speechless’”

The former Good Morning Britain presenter quipped: “If only they were.”

Earlier today, the couple released a lengthy statement released via the Archewell Foundation website.

They said they are “speechless” and “heartbroken” about what is going on.

They also added how they hope to lend their “support” to troops who fought in Afghanistan and Afghan people “facing violence and terror”.

Their full statement reads: “The world is exceptionally fragile right now. As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.

“As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, and the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.

“And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex offered support to the community suffering in light of the news.

The statement continued: “When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realize it or not.

“And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we, as a people, are being conditioned to accept it.

“It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action — together.”

The couple also announced they will be taking steps to support organisations helping on the ground and urged people in “positions of global influence” to do more.

They concluded: “As an international community, it is the decisions we make now — to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet — that will prove our humanity.”

Following Piers’ tweet about how the couple should remain “speechless”, he left many of his followers split.

Agreeing with the presenter, one wrote: “Honestly who actually cares about them or the fact they’re ‘speechless.’”

While another added: “So remind me again, what’s the point of breaking one’s silence to say that they are speechless?”

However, others argued Harry was more in a position to comment on events than Piers as he had served in the military.

Defending the Duke, they penned: “After doing a tour there I’d say he’s in more of a position than you to have his say Piers.”

“I think Harry’s got more right to comment on it than you to be honest,” a second added.

A third user called out Piers for his preoccupation with the couple.

They wrote: “Mate give this agenda up now. It’s proper boring.” (sic)
