Louise Minchin, 52, revealed her husband David had some concerns when she spent a load of money on cycling gear, fearing she would never actually use it. But the fitness fanatic soon proved him wrong, spurred on by competing in numerous triathlons and competitions, she soon found a love for cycling.
My husband Dave was like, ‘Why are you spending all this money?’
Chatting to Olympian Geraint Thomas on his Cycling Club podcast, she thought back to the roots of what made her fall head over heels for the sport in the first place, and it turns out it was a BBC Breakfast Christmas Challenge.
Looking back on the 2012 event that was filmed at Manchester Velodrome, she said: “I’d never sat on a racing bike before I raced in the Velodrome.”
“Which is ridiculous, isn’t it!”
Describing it as an “epiphany” moment, she remembered thinking: “Cycling isn’t just for the likes of Geraint, I can do this!”
She quickly added, chuckling: “Not in the same way, believe me… but this is hugely exhilarating and joyful!”
Louise was joined by then BBC star Susanna Reid, Charlie Stayt and her former co-host Bill Turnbull, who took to the boards to see who could get the fastest time for their teams.
Louise and Bill went head to head and she cheekily noted that she won by a minuscule amount.
“I came off that day and beat Bill Turnbull by 500ths of a second,” she laughed.
“And that gave me the spark to go and buy myself a road bike.”
With this drive to become a serious cyclist at the back of her mind, she went out and bought all the gear, something her hubby was a little concerned about.
Recalling the conversation, she said: “I’d never tried cleats on, but I went out and bought everything in one go,” including shorts, helmet and the shoes.
“My husband Dave was like, ‘Why are you spending all this money?’
“‘You’re never going to be on your bike!'”
She then beamed smugly: “He was wrong!”
Earlier on in the interview, Louise apologised profusely to the double Olympic gold medallist for being late to the podcast.
Following their chat, the BBC Breakfast star took to Twitter to gush over the “privilege” to chat the the sportsman.
“What a privilege to chat to the one and only @GeraintThomas86,” she penned.
“Thanks so much for inviting me on the pod, and sorry for being late.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One and The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club can be streamed on all podcast platforms.
