ITV’s Saturday Morning and This Morning star James Martin, 49, has revealed that cooking for his first wedding at the age of just 13 completely “put him off” repeating the role again later on in his career as a chef. The TV chef revealed he struggled with having to “try to please everybody” when he catered for the wedding at the time.
James also admitted he was left feeling frustrated after all the food he was making started to “overcook”, as the newlyweds’ photographer took “two and a half hours” to take snaps of all the guests.
The presenter recalled the negative experience in a candid interview from November last year.
James explained: “I used to help out at restaurants at the ages of eight and ten, and by the time I was 12 I had my own little business that catered for parties and weddings with my mum.”
Addressing his first experience catering for a wedding, he divulged: “[It] put me off weddings for the rest of my life.
“You’re trying to please everybody, and then the photographer takes two and a half hours so everything’s overcooking.”
James went on to vow to never cater for weddings again.
He added to Reader’s digest: “I’ll never cater for weddings again.
“That’s the golden rule.”
James also revealed to the publication that he never predicted he would become a TV chef, despite his talent for cooking developing from a young age.
The ITV star said: “I’d never imagined doing this for a living.
“When you’re 16 and training in college, or 18 and getting your a*** kicked in London 24/7, TV was never on the horizon, was it?
“Your dream was to be a head chef.”

James previously spoke out against a surprising wedding food trend involving cheese during an episode of his Saturday Morning show back in 2020.
The chef addressed the snack, which he encountered at a wedding when he was younger, while preparing a delicious dish with celery in the ITV programme’s kitchen.
Explaining his recipe, James told viewers: “The veg can go in our pan, again with a little bit of celery.
“Often people don’t use celery really for cooking nowadays, but back when I was training in college we used to braise this a lot, it’s a fantastic ingredient.”
He added: “I became sort of scarred for life when we used to go and visit weddings when I was a teenager and they put cheese in a tube over a celery stick. Do you remember that?”
Hitting out at the retro food preparation idea, James exclaimed: “Weddings, cheese in a tube, what was that all about?
“What was going on in England? What was happening?”
James and his TV producer girlfriend Louise Davies have been together for almost 10 years.
However, the chef previously shared that the couple have no plans to tie the knot, telling the Sunday People in 2019: “No, it doesn’t interest me in the slightest, mainly because I’ve catered for so many weddings, really.
“I admire people who do it, that’s fine, but I’m quite happy. I don’t need to spend 60 grand on a day, no, I’m more than happy thanks.”
