The American Music Awards are no stranger to odd moments over the years, from Lady Gaga smashing a load of glass bottles on her piano but carrying on performing regardless in 2009, to Miley Cyrus performing with an animatronic space-cat in 2013.
The 2022 AMAs also had their fair share of weird moments, from Machine Gun Kelly asking if man really had visited the moon to Chris Brown being booed by the crowd en masse after winning an award.
Here's a rundown of all the strange moment's you may have missed from this year's AMAs.
Machine Gun Kelly questions the moon landing
Machine Gun Kelly questioned whether the moon landing was real while collecting the award for Favourite Rock Artist, all while wearing a suit covered in massive spikes.
“There have been some people in the rock community who called me a tourist, but they’re wrong,” he said. “I’m a rocket man. We weren’t born on the moon but we looked at it and we were curious and then were went there … supposedly … and these two rock albums were me going to the moon.”
The 32 year old, who is engaged to Megan Fox, also noted that his bizarre Dolce & Gabanna suit was “really uncomfortable to pee in”. We have so many questions…
Chris Brown is booed by the crowd
Singer Chris Brown wasn’t there in person to collect his award for Favorite Male R&B Artist, but that didn’t stop the artist causing controversy. When it was announced he’d won the award, he was met with booing from the crowd, who clearly weren’t happy about the win.
To make things more dramatic, Chris had allegedly been signed up to appear at the awards and perform a Michael Jackson tribute, but had his appearance cancelled at the last minute.
In an Instagram post earlier that week, the singer had claimed he was already in rehearsals for the show, writing: “U SERIOUS?” He also commented on the Instagram post: “WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown.”
Kelly Rowland asks crowd to “chill”
Kelly Rowland stepped on stage to accept the award on behalf of Chris Brown and asked the crowd to calm down as they booed the controversial singer.
“Now Chris Brown is not here tonight so I’m accepting this award on his behalf,” she said before addressing the audience saying “Excuse me… chill out.”
Rowland then continued: “But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music and I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer. I’ll take this award — bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
Taylor Swift leads stars on AMAs red carpet – see all the best snaps
Pink rollerskates onto stage to perform new song
Pink performed her new song Never Gonna Not Dance Again live for the first time at the AMAs and impressed the crowd by performing the whole thing on rollerskates.
After showing a clip from the song's music video, the star skated onto the stage along with a host of acrobatic backup dancers to deliver a 1980s-inspired performance of the track.
Later in the evening, Pink performed a beautiful rendition of Hopelessly Devoted To You in tribute to Grease star Olivia Newton-John, who passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on 8 August this year, after battling cancer on and off for 30 years.
The singer, who attended the awards show with her husband and two children, told the audience that Olivia was “an absolute icon, and also, she was a wonderful human being. I loved her voice."
"My daughter just got done doing Grease in her theatre production, and she actually helped me learn the song," she added.
Taylor Swift pats Sabrina Carpenter on head
A funny moment between Taylor Swift and fellow singer Sabrina Carpenter went viral after the two women were seen joking about their height difference as Taylor collected an award for her 10 minute re-release of All Too Well.
With Taylor standing at around 5’10″ tall and Sabrina being around 5’ tall, the two women were seen laughing and hugging each other on stage before Taylor gave Sabrina a pat on the head.
One fan joked on Twitter: “Taylor swift just patted sabrina carpenter [on the] head to give her main pop girl powers”.
Anitta wears a butt bearing gown
The AMAs are no stranger to daring outfits, but Brazillian singer Anitta may have won the prize this year with her butt bearing gown.
The singer wore an elegant black and white sequinned dress with a cheeky detail (literally), as she flashed a bit of bum cheek through panels on the back of her outfit.
