Excruciating back pain has left me suicidal & I can't talk to my wife about it

DEAR DEIDRE: I AM at the end of my tether with back pain. It’s got so bad that I’ve even had thoughts about ending my life.

I am a 46-year-old married man. My wife is 44.

I have suffered with disc problems in my back for years.

My doctor sends me to a physio and I’ve been given stretches to do but I have had continuous pain for three years.

The pain has now spread to my groin.

I can’t bring myself to go back to my doctor just to be fobbed off again. And I can’t talk to my wife about how I am feeling because I don’t want to upset her.

I feel there is not much to keep me here. But I worry if I go off sick from work we will lose our home.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m sorry you are struggling.

You have the classic symptoms of depression, no doubt brought on by the pain, so do talk to your doctor again and tell him you are having thoughts about suicide.
