The autumn season not only sees the return of pumpkin spiced lattes but it also welcomes the spider mating season.
It’s a time when male house spiders — from the genus Tegenaria — come inside in search of warmth, shelter and the lure of love.
And this year, it appears those who are fearful of creepy crawlies have even more to be scared about.
For a new study has warned that an infestation of red fire ants – described as ‘one of the most invasive species in the world’ – could soon swarm the UK.
An expert has now revealed how to prevent insects from coming into your home, explaining they are often looking for dry and secure locations to stay.
Paul Gibbens, a property expert, told FEMAIL what you should to do if you spot the insects.
Spider mating season usually kicks off at the beginning of September until mid-October. As the UK has 650 different species you can expect to see more lace, money, cellar and house spiders in your home in the coming weeks (stock image)
1. ELMINATE HIDING PLACES
Divulging what environment spiders love, Paul revealed: ‘Spiders love hiding places. Reduce clutter in basements, garages, and other storage areas to avoid infestations.’
On those much needed tips on preventing the insect weaving its webs in your home, he said a key tip is to ensure your garden is well-kept, he added: ‘Trim back trees, shrubs, and other plants from touching your home.
‘This prevents spiders from using them as bridges to enter your home.’
2. USE OIL TO DETER THE INSECTS
Peppermint oil is also said to be a cheap and affordable form of preventing the insect from getting into your home, according to cleaning expert from Tap Warehouse, Nancy Emery.
She also added: ‘Other oils that are useful in deterring spiders include those in the citrus family like orange, lemon, lime and citronella.
‘These are typically more expensive to buy so it’s worth mixing one part lemon juice to two parts warm water in a spray bottle for a similar effect.’
She also suggest the use of spider catchers for those who are perhaps a bit frightened of the eight-legged creature.

She added: ‘You can invest in a spider catcher that can do the job at arm’s length. These are a quick and easy solution and won’t cause any harm or mess.’
3. DESTROY THEIR FOOD SUPPLY
For those wanting to keep their homes creepy crawly free, the property specialist, of website Housebuyers4u, also advised the application of residual insecticide around doors and windows to deter spiders.
He also stated: ‘Using a yellow or sodium vapor light bulbs for outside lighting can help as it will attract fewer insects, meaning less food for spiders.’
He stressed that keeping your home tidy is key to avoiding a red fire ant infestation, meaning cleaning up any spills and keeping food sealed.
To keep your home ant free, you should also try and keep it free of too much moisture, he advised.
He also told Femail that you can generally place bait stations for ants around the perimeter of you home.
He explained: ‘The worker ants will carry the bait [insecticide] back to the colony, which can help in reducing the ant population.’
4. CONTACT PEST CONTROL
He urged people to regularly check their homes for ant and spider infestations.
He added: ‘If the problem persists or becomes severe, consider consulting with a professional pest control service.’
5. FIX UP ANY LEAKAGES
Paul explained: ‘Red fire ants are attracted to moisture, so you should fix any leaky faucets or pipes and ensure that your home’s gutters and downspouts are functioning properly.’
