Head’s up, you’re going to need some tissues for this one.
A video has made its way around the internet – and was even featured on Good Morning Britain – showing an elderly man being surprised by his wife at a care home.
The video, shared by the couple’s granddaughter, Charlotte, showed her nan Betty Meredith sitting in the care home her granddad, Kenneth had moved into five weeks earlier.
Charl, from Redditch, explained that Kenneth, 96, had gone to the home to be cared for after his dementia worsened, but Betty, 91, ‘couldn’t live without him’.
She decided to also move into the care home, and organised with staff at the Bourn View care home that she’d surprise her beloved husband with the news.
Unbeknown to Kenneth, Betty had moved into the floor below as she waited for her Covid-19 test results – but would continue to phone him for their daily chats.
Once her results came back negative, Betty and staff helped arrange the surprise for Kenneth on November 10.
They went above and beyond, decorating the room with heart-shaped balloons and flowers, and playing the pair’s favourite music – The Platters’ 1954 hit ‘Only You’,
As Kenneth walks in to see his wife Betty, it’s clear he’s over the moon.
Charl’s clip has now been liked over 20,000 times on Twitter, with comments pouring in from people who were touched by the sweet moment.
The care home also posted the video to their Facebook, saying: ‘Betty made the decision to move in to Bourn View and be with her husband but first had to isolate! Kenneth had no idea Betty had moved in and today the two of them were reunited at a surprise meal! Betty perfectly put it, they are now back “Together, forever.”
‘There was not one dry eye as the staff cheered and celebrated the wonderful couple’s reunion.’
Care worker Rosie Boshell, 24, who helped decorate and set up the surprise said: ‘They couldn’t cope without each other any longer. Kenneth was emotional everyday and missed her so much. He would cry daily to us…
‘The day came when Betty’s Covid test came back negative so me and another worker Kylie decorated the bistro and sat Betty down.
‘A senior carer brought Ken down and he was in bits. He ran towards her. He was over the moon.
‘Afterwards Betty took Ken to show him their new room. He couldn’t believe she was moving in and now had the same room to share. Every time I went to see them they were just smiling. They’re just so happy.’
Betty and Kenneth, who have been married for 71 years, have warmed people’s hearts, with one person commenting: ‘Omg my heart just melted’.
Another wrote: ‘I’m not crying you are! No, wait, I am crying.’
