I know my family means well but I hate hanging around with them

DEAR DEIDRE: I KNOW my family means well but I wince when anyone suggests getting together. I hate hanging out with them.

My parents are separated and I have two sisters who live with my mum. My mum and my eldest sister are extremely negative about everything from the weather to my outfit choices.

I’m a 27-year-old woman and live with my boyfriend, who’s 29.

I try being optimistic and upbeat, but they’re fed up with me always saying nice things.

They love playing the victim and act as though the whole world is against them.

I wish I enjoyed spending time with them, but the more I do, I just can’t wait to leave.

DEIDRE SAYS: The saying “you cannot choose your family” may be true, but you can choose how you deal with them. You deserve to be happy no matter what your family says or does.

Being around toxic relatives can feel overwhelming at times but it’s not your fault.

Limit the time you spend with them and surround yourself with friends and others who make you feel good.
