DEAR DEIDRE: MY new job is a nightmare.
I’m useless at it but I feel like I don’t have any other options.

I got pregnant during my final year at school, so I never took my GCSEs.
As a result, I’ve never made a career for myself.
Instead, I’ve always had odd jobs in retail and hospitality.
I’m now 28.
After the pandemic, I was desperate to start afresh so last month I took a job as a waitress in an Italian restaurant.
But I’m constantly messing up orders and dropping plates.

It doesn’t help that they refuse to train me.
I would leave – but I don’t know what else I’d do instead.
Do you have any advice?
DEIDRE SAYS: You need to remember that your employer gave you this job for a reason – they saw something in you they did not see in the other candidates you were up against.
You cannot be expected to know everything from the start, so don’t be so hard on yourself.
Give it another month, then, if you are still not happy, reach out to the Prince’s Trust.
It will have opportunities to retrain in various skills and careers (princestrust.org.uk).
