Inside Im A Celebs Naughty Boys family life off screen as he cares for his mum

Before heading to Wales, I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star Naughty Boy admitted that it would be "difficult" for him to appear on the show while his mother stays at home with dementia.

The music producer lives with and cares for his mum Zahida, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2019 following a stroke two years prior.

And after being confirmed for the popular ITV series' line-up this year, the 36-year-old, real name Shahid Khan, explained that he hoped his time in Gwrych Castle will help raise awareness about dementia.

"Dementia UK needs constant funding, and I am going to miss Mum the most whilst I am away in the Castle. I live with Mum, and I am used to seeing her all the time," he revealed.

The DJ continued: "Mum hasn't been very well, and it is going to be difficult for me being away. But that said, I think the break will be good for both of us."

During lockdown, the star told Sky News that watching his mother's condition worsen was his "biggest struggle" and had taken its toll on his mental health.

"As a family [dementia] can seem like a lonely experience… you don't think anyone will understand. It does affect your mental health," he said.

Despite her worsening health, Naughty Boy said he found relief in using music to connect with his mum, regularly playing the piano to help calm her.

"It's not the best experience – but as long as I get a glimpse of mum, a smile, something that reminders her of a happier day… that's enough for me right now. I'll do this until the day I die," he explained.

Naughty Boy was defended by his closeknit family after being criticised for expressing his plans to quit ITV's I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! on Tuesday night.

The 36 year old was living in the notorious Clink since arriving the first night and previously expressed he felt "traumatised" by his experience.

And after he told his fellow campmates he wanted to leave following a betrayal by the Main Camp, some viewers didn't take too kindly to his needs and made it known on social media.

However, a family member was quick to defend him on Twitter as they re-shared another person's tweet around the stigma of mental health around men.

"This! If only everyone knew what he's battling on the outside world," they tweeted from Naughty Boy's official Twitter account.

"His mum (my nan) is battling dementia and he has been taking care of her for the last 5 years. This is the first time he has left her to do something life-changing! He is just overwhelmed and he will be fine."

Coming back to his campmates, Naughty Boy declared: "I do think my time here is done."

"I had a feeling earlier, and I was thinking about mum, and obviously I love you guys…

"I don't think after knowing what the Main Camp probably knew what they were putting me through knowing I did the challenge earlier – I don't know if I could ever join that camp."
