I am 32 and have been married to my husband, who is 30, for two years.

We were supposed to get our own place but moved in temporarily with his parents after our honeymoon – then the pandemic struck, my husband lost his job and we’re stuck with them.

All my husband and I have done since we’ve been here is bicker and argue over stupid things.

We live in our one room, which is packed full of our things, and only go downstairs to get things from the kitchen.

It’s not my home – I’m a guest. I have to ask if I want to have a shower or use the washing machine.

We have no privacy or space. We can’t have friends round, or even relax in the living room and watch TV.

I’ve tried talking to my husband about it but he just thinks I’m being ungrateful.
He doesn’t understand why I’m so miserable.

It’s making me question whether I even want to be with him.

DEIDRE SAYS: Talk to him again and tell him you are at breaking point. My support pack, Standing Up For Yourself, should help with this.

He has to know you’re questioning your future with him and something needs to change.

His self-confidence is probably low because of his job loss, so reassure him that you love him and this isn’t about status.

Ask him to talk to his parents to see if changes can be made. Talking to familylives.org.uk will help.

And start looking for another place. Contact shelter.org.uk for information on housing issues.
