  • Meghan Markle, 39, gave birth to her and Prince Harry’s daughter Lili on Friday
  • Birth was 25 years to the day that Princess Diana visited Meghan’s college
  • Princess of Wales visited the college on 4 June 1996 during trip to the US
  • Duchess of Sussex attended Northwestern University and graduated in 2003

Royal fans have been left amazed after Meghan Markle gave birth her daughter Lili exactly 25 years after Princess Diana visited her alama matter Northwestern University.

The Duke, 36, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, who are currently living in their $14 million Californian mansion, announced yesterday that they had welcomed their second child, Lili Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 4.

The date is already particularly poignant for the couple, because it is exactly 25 years to the day that Harry’s late mother visited Meghan’s former college during a trip to Chicago.

Royal followers were quick to point out the significance of the date for the couple, with one fan account writing: ‘On June 4th 1996, Princess Diana visited Northwestern Univeristy – Meghan’s alma matter. 25 years later on June 4th 2021, Northwestern graduate Meghan gives birth to Diana’s granddaughter.’

In 1996, Diana spent several days visiting the university and the Chicago area where she met with students and stopped by a local hospital.

The royal wowed locals on the whirlwind trip, which took place between 4-6 June.

The main reason for her visit was to raise money for the University’s Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center, because Diana was President of London’s Royal Marsden Hospital and its Cancer Fund at the time.

During the visit, Diana wowed staff and students by stepping out for a fundraising gala in a purple gown the same shade as the university’s official colour.

The date is already particularly poignant for the couple, because it is exactly 25 years to the day that Harry’s late mother visited Meghan’s former college during a trip to Chicago (pictured, Diana on a walk-about of Northwestern University with the then-president Henry S. Bienen)

Former Northwestern president Henry Bienen told North by Northwestern in 2016: ‘I asked if she knew that purple was the color of Northwestern, because it could just simply be the royal color, and she just laughed. I think she did it on purpose.’

The royal went on to be spotted in a Northwestern sweater, which she regularly wore as part of her more low-key gym attire.

Meanwhile Meghan was a student at the university from 2000 to 2003, and was a member of its Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

The royal graduated from the Illinois-based college’s school of communication in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree and a double major in theatre and international studies.

During the trip, Diana wowed staff and students and was seen hugging children on a hospital visit

After graduating she moved back to her hometown, LA, to pursue a career as an actress, landing various movie and small screen roles before getting her big break – being cast as Rachel Zane in the smash hit legal drama Suits.

Many fans were amazed by the link between the dates, with one person commenting: ‘Such amazing news . Lili Diana is such perfect name . Congratulations to the duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their little family is complete.’

Another wrote: ‘Omg I’m crying! That is fate! There is definitely a High being, a force, or whatever you may call it, that’s at work here. So happy for Harry & Meghan.’

One commented: ‘Bless them. Diana would be so proud. May and June is going to be a super busy time for them from now on.’

Many royal fans were amazed by the coincidence, with some calling it ‘fate’ and others saying the birth was ‘destiny’

Others called it ‘destiny’, while a fourth wrote: ‘The connection is so beautiful.’

Lilibet Diana, named after her great-grandmother the Queen and grandmother Princess Diana, was born on Friday at 11.40am at a Californian hospital.

It is not known when relatives on her father’s side of the family will first meet the young royal.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said they were ‘delighted’ by the arrival of baby Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

They wrote: ‘We are delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.’
