She told them: "I woke up on my 80th birthday virtually in shock because all I could think about was actually, 80, is getting close to not being here.
"Something happened where I went ok 'you've got to breath and plan what you want to do.'"
In response, Ruth Langford said: "Well they say that it brings it into sharp focus sometimes, without being too depressing because we want to celebrate with you."
Arlene spent the day with her loved ones at a party later that day.
She said: "It was a family day, with all my family from different parts of the country coming together and celebrating in my house.
"It was all generations from old me right down to my little granddaughters and grandnephews too."
The star admitted she kept cleaning up throughout the party and said she can't ignore mess.
Arlene also spoke about how she plans to mark National Trust's Celebration Day on May 28.
She said she will plant a tree in memory of Strictly co-star Len Goodman who sadly died last month.
Arlene added: "I'm going to celebrate Len Goodman because I found out in the morning that Len had passed away and that day I happened to get a message asking would I be involved.
"That moment felt like the two were together on purpose."
