Today Sir Tom Jones appeared on Zoe Ball’s Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 where he discussed his newly-released album, Surrounded By Time. The record is the 80-year-old’s 42nd studio album and features a collection of covers. During his interview with Zoe, Sir Tom spoke candidly about one cover he released in 1988, Kiss, and how he regretted not working with the song’s original singer, Prince.
Discussing meeting Prince for the first time in 1989, Sir Tom said: “First of all I met him in London, it was his birthday and I was invited to go there.
“So I said: ‘Thanks for the song, Kiss.’ And he said: ‘Well thanks for doing it!’
“I didn’t ask him if he liked it or not, but we had a little chat then.”
Years later, in 1999, the pair bumped into one another in Germany when Sir Tom appeared on a TV show.
Sir Tom said: “I was on there doing Sex Bomb and he was there, Prince, [but] he didn’t do the show. Afterwards, I went back to the hotel lobby and he was there.
“So we went to this club and, god bless him, we talked all night! And I said: ‘Good god, I’ve never heard you talk so much … I tried to talk to you in London but, you know.’
“He said: ‘That was then, this is now.’ Then he offered me. He said: ‘You’ve gotta come to my recording studio and hang out there, we can come up with some stuff [music].’
“But I was so busy at the time – this is why I called the album Surrounded By Time – time is very important.”
Tom Jones’ phone goes off during interview on Radio 2
Sir Tom sighed down the phone to Zoe: “That’s one of my regrets. When people ask if I have regrets: Yes.
“I regret that I didn’t go to Paisley Park and record with him because we could have come up with something.
“Because, thank god, he used to watch me in Vegas when he was young … I mean he was a genius.
“But I should have taken him up on it and it’s a big regret that I have.”
Prince died on April 21, 2016 from an accidental overdose of fentanyl. The star was 57-years-old.
The singer is remembered in Sir Tom’s new album, where Kiss features as one of its biggest tracks.
The She’s A Lady singer later revealed he recorded the album long before lockdown began last year.
He told Zoe: “I’ve been waiting over a year now. Then of course my son Mark has been getting it prepared, so I’ve been waiting, waiting, waiting.”
Despite the long gap between the album’s recording and release, Sir Tom explained the delay has had its benefits.
The crooner continued: “It was good to have the time to concentrate on the sound. I’m thrilled with it and I must say thank you for your support.”
Sir Tom went on: “We should have [performed the album] in 2020. I thought I’m going to be 80-years-old, what could stop me now? Well, what about no audience? [laugh]
“So, I’ve been biting my nails for a year now to get back on the stage because that’s where I live.
“When you do these songs live… that’s the big test for me.”
