Former Brookside star Louis Emerick has admitted to causing serious injury by careless driving after hitting two 12-year-old girls during an incident last year.
The actor, who played Mick Johnson on the groundbreaking Channel 4 soap, was driving towards Wallasey Village on October 2, 2022, as the two girls crossed Poulton Road, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
The 64-year-old’s vehicle cut the corner of the right-hand bend and went into the centre-hatched markings, where he collided with the two girls.
Emerick was breathalysed at the scene, which showed no evidence of drink or drugs, with the CPS adding that his speed was not ‘excessive’ but that he was ‘not seen to slow down or brake’.
The soap star, who also appeared in Coronation Street as taxi driver Mike, had not seen the girls crossing because the sun was in his eyes. He was wearing prescription glasses at the time, which can react to sunlight.
Emerick admitted that he couldn’t see clearly because of the sun and thus he should’ve slowed down.
He apologised for the incident and has been ‘fully co-operative and remorseful’ throughout the investigation, district crown prosecutor Linda Melia said, adding that Emerick had been in contact with both girls’ families to apologise.
‘It’s clear [he] did not mean to injure these girls, but the events of that day are a lesson that, when we are at the wheel of a car, care and attention are needed at all times,’ she said.
He is due to be sentenced on June 20.
Brookside, which made Emerick a household name, was controversially axed in 2003.
Re-runs of soap, however, launched on STV Player back in February and, after just one week, it became the fastest show to ever reach 1 million streams on the service, and has since been streamed over 4 million times.
The first 95 episodes are currently available to stream, with five outings added to the service every Wednesday, allowing viewers to rediscover the early days of the serial, as the Grants, the Collins’ and the Huntingtons, in addition to Petra Taylor, Alan Partridge and Samantha Davis, settle into the close.
