Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary welcomed Gok Wan and his cousin Alyssa on to Wednesday’s This Morning where they spoke about the 13-year-old’s cancer diagnosis. Last year, Alyssa was diagnosed with leukaemia, and at the time, doctors told her family to prepare for the worst. However, after undergoing a world-first, revolutionary gene therapy, Alyssa has now been in remission for six months.
Appearing alongside her mum, Kiona and fashion expert Gok, Alyssa shared her inspirational story.
However, the story was too much for host Alison as she choked back tears.
Dermot was forced to take over as Alison said: “I can’t do this.”
The emotional moment came after Alyssa read out a list of all the people she wanted to thank for saving her life.
She thanked all of the hospital staff as well as her friends and family who “stayed in touch” and tried “donate bone barrow”.
“We want to give you a little thank you, don’t we, Alison?” Dermot said.
As she wiped away tears, the host replied: “I don’t know if I can do it. You have really brought me to tears.
“You’re such a giving person, I can see that, so we thought we’d give you something lovely.”
“We know you’re…” Alison continued as she trailed off: “I can’t do it, oh my god.”
The Big Brother star handed the piece of paper to Dermot so he could finish the segment.
“We know you’re a huge Harry Potter fan, are you?” Alison continued as she tried to carry on.
“We have arranged a VIP experience for you and your whole family, The Forbidden Forest Harry Potter experience in Cheshire,” Dermot said as he took over.
Alyssa also left viewers in tears, with many taking to social media to praise the brave teen.
Lisa Philpott wrote: “Aaaaw Alyssa – crying here as I’m so happy that you are cured, sweet darling. Enjoy your Christmas!”
Sara penned: “Oh what a girl Alyssa is. I’m not crying at all. It’s just dusty in here.”
While Julie Ann Burrows added: “Every time I see this Beautiful Young lady Alyssa my heart fills with love & Happiness.
“I have a form of blood cancer Multiple Myeloma and what this news means to people like me is absolutely incredible. Thank you soo much Alyssa I will never be able to thank you.” (sic)
“I’m sobbing at the good-hearted and pure energy of Alyssa!” Emma tweeted.
Ruth went on to add: ” what a lovely brave girl Alyssa is @therealgokwan your family must be so proud of her.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
