James Argent has explained just how self-conscious he became after reaching 27 stone during lockdown whilst battling a binge-eating disorder.
The former Towie star, 34, has lost nearly half his body weight since last year when he was fitted with a gastric sleeve and was warned he’d be at high risk of dying amid the coronavirus pandemic due to being overweight and asthmatic unless he lost weight.
After losing 13 stone since the operation and turning his lifestyle around, he chatted with his mum Patricia Argent in a candid segment on Loose Women today, which saw the star investigate male eating disorders.
Asked when she started to notice things getting worse for her son, Patricia explained: ’Lockdown is when it started to creep up on you.
‘You seemed to be putting on weight every week and I noticed you weren’t moving as much as you could have been, and you just didn’t seem happy in yourself.’
Patricia added: ‘It was hard, it was hard to see you feeling so uncomfortable in yourself.
James went on to explain how he was ‘so image conscious’ during his battle with his eating disorder.
He admitted to his mum how this made it difficult for him to go outside, sharing: ‘I was waiting until it was dark to leave the house.’
Luckily, the star confirmed he is feeling much happier in himself now, regularly updating fans on his more active lifestyle.
James said: ‘I think a massive, massive turning point for me was when you came into my room and I was lying there.
‘It was during the day and I was just so tired, so uncomfortable, I was so depressed, I didn’t feel like getting out of bed.
‘You came in and you just really cried. I remember you saying, “I don’t recognise my son,” the reality star shared.
Becoming emotional, Patricia replied: ‘I do remember that day, James.’
Elsewhere, James recently thanked fans for their support during the difficult period in his life on his Instagram, after undergoing his body transformation.
‘I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me on my weight loss journey. When I look in the mirror, I’m finally happy with the man looking back at me.
‘I’m delighted to be starting 2022 as the best version of me. The future is looking bright, and I can’t wait to live it.’
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
