The criminal barrister suffered the nasty injury which caused him severe pain as the condition causes the soft tissue between the bones to push out of place, pressing on nerves and causing discomfort.

Fans flooded the comments with 'get well soon' wishes to the TV star.

One fan put: "OMFG a prolapsed disc is SO painful! I’m very glad you have got it repaired and are on the mend,

"I had one and I remember thinking ‘I would not wish this on my worst enemy’ #getwellsoon," they added.

A second typed: "Hope you recover quickly," while a third added: "Best wishes for a speedy recovery. We need your voice of reason on our televisions, especially where politicians from all sides are concerned."

A fourth commented: "OMG Rob,I feel for you so much, just glad you've had it dealt with,it's a very painful condition, now for you to rest and take it easy."

Rob explained that he was cheered up by legendary popstar Lulu who'd surprised him with a gift after he interviewed her on the morning show.

"When you return home and find out that @lulukc is your valentine," he wrote. "Who needs a hot scaffolder anyway.. she makes me want to shout."

The card he'd received from Lulu read: "Happy Valentine's Day darling, Love Lulu x."
