A STRANGER Things filming picture has confirmed the return of beloved characters – as bosses promise a ‘bigger and bolder’ season four.

Production on the hit Netflix series' fourth outing has already begun, and a new photo posted on Instagram has revealed characters Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) are back.

The two women were seen filming a scene together in Atlanta, although Natalia is the only one visible in the photo.

Meanwhile, a Netflix exec has promised that season four will produce one of the show's biggest stories so far.

"Season Four is bigger, bolder and more intricate than ever,” Netflix's VP Physical Production Momita SenGupta recently told Deadline. “So this is the first time the show will be travelling beyond Atlanta.”

A recent trailer for season four revealed Jim Hopper (David Harbour) to be a prisoner in Russia after the explosion in the season three finale.

David, 44, recently spoke to The Wrap about his characters latest drama, saying: "So [creators Matt and Ross Duffer] told me the arc of the season, and then I think we got Episode Eight like a couple months before we shot it.

"And I remember reading that episode, and they hadn’t told me this whole thing about this Russian facility at the end and how that was gonna be the sort of teaser and like ‘The American’ and the Demogorgon.

"They hadn’t told me about any of that, actually, and I just read it in the script and I thought it was amazing.”

While season four is gearing up to be the show's biggest to date, there's still debate about how many more seasons there will be.

Series producer and director Shawn Levy recently told Collider about the future of the show: "I mean I will say we have a good sense of stuff that happens in Season Four.

"There’s very much the possibility of a season beyond that one, that’s currently undecided.

"And what I would just say is part of the chaos and fun of this particular show is that while the Duffers and the writer’s room and we producers outline the entire season, the Duffers really use the writing process to revisit, reassess and question all of their prior assumption.

"So even though we always start off with a good sense of the major arcs of the season.

"We’re always ready for shifts and surprises because if the Duffers stumble into a different or surprising inspiration while they rewrite the script, we’re going to follow that inspiration and throw out some ideas in order to embrace some new ones that are more exciting.”

Stranger Things season 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
