When does Marcella series 3 start on ITV?

FANS have had an agonising wait for the next series of ITV Noir detective series Marcella.

To make it worse, other countries have been able to watch the series on Netflix since summer. But the wait is over for UK viewers – find out how to watch here…

When does Marcella series 3 start on ITV?

Marcella will return on Tuesday, January 26 at 9PM on ITV with a third series.

It will continue to air weekly, but if you can't wait that long you can watch the whole new series on ITV Hub, once the first episode has shown on TV.

The detective series last aired over two years ago on ITV.

Emmy award-winning actress Anna Friel will be returning as Marcella.

Hugo Speer and Amanda Burton will join the new series while Ray Panthaki returns to the series as Rav Sangha.

ITV billed season 3: "Following on from the dramatic conclusion of the previous series, the new eight-parter sees Marcella in Belfast as an undercover detective.

"She has taken on a new identity, Keira, and has infiltrated the infamous Maguire crime family but as she investigates their activities, questions come to the fore about how much she’s embraced the Keira personality and left Marcella behind.

"In true Marcella style, the series has interweaving storylines with strands focusing upon the Maguires’ criminal operations.

"As she inhabits the character of Keira, Marcella’s quest for the truth puts her in danger and others in harm’s way. Her undercover role makes her take risks, but will her old life eventually catch up with her?"

How did season 2 of Marcella end?

Marcella's season two finale was a bombshell of an episode – stop reading if you don't want spoilers!

At the end of the last series, Detective Marcella discovered that Samantha’s mother, Jane Colletti, was the serial killer.

Midwife Jane killed her victims in order to "lock the evil in".

In a dramatic turn of events, Marcella realised that Jane had kidnapped and was planning to kill her son Edward.

Marcella also made the horrifying realisation that she had inadvertently killed her baby daughter many years ago.

Unable to cope with the guilt, Marcella tries to throw herself off a building – but her colleague Rav talks her out of it.

The last we see of Marcella is her cutting off all her hair and slashing her mouth before making a getaway.

What did Anna Friel say on Twitter about Marcella's return?

The show was originally delayed due to Covid restrictions, but was released for the rest of the world in June 2020.

Anna wrote on Twitter: "#Marcella season 3. Coming to @netflix June 14th . UK must wait I am so sorry until September xxx

"One viewer replied: "Shocking that teasing people"

An apologetic Anna responded: "Sorry it wasn’t meant as a tease. Just for those in other countries around the world who can see it on June 14th xxx"

Although Friel previously said the new series would be released in September – but due to controversial scenes the show was delayed further.

Anna, who is executive producer of the show, told the Daily Mail: "It’s been delayed here because of the opening scenes featuring refugees who are killed."

"ITV thought the storyline was too similar to the court case and they wanted to make sure the jury wasn’t prejudiced."

"So we had to wait, which is such a shame because it went out in 34 countries and was a huge success but people here haven’t been able to see it. It’s frustrating, but you can’t help that Hans could seemingly see into the future."
