The fate of Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) was left up in the air after the catastrophic events of Yellowstone’s third season. Once ranch hand Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) learns of the attack on his fiancée’s life, comments from his bunkhouse co-stars indicate the ruthless cowboy could be about to show even more of his softer side when the Paramount drama returns.

Ranch hand Rip Wheeler could undergo an irrevocable character shift in the next season of Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama, Yellowstone.

In last year’s gripping finale, ‘The World Is Purple’, the Dutton Ranch was subjected to a series of horrific attacks.

While Rip’s employer, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), was gunned down on the highway, his daughter Beth received an explosive package in her office.

Although Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly’s apparent involvement in season four seems to have confirmed Beth’s survival, it’s likely the Dutton’s shrewd banker received some life-threatening injuries.

With his girlfriend, now fiancée, facing a lengthy stay in the hospital, many fans have assumed Rip will be on the path of revenge in the upcoming fourth season.

However, viewers have also witnessed Rip’s evolution from hardened cowboy to loving caregiver after Beth suffered an earlier attack from the Beck brothers.

The bunkhouse cast of the series hinted this trend could continue when they sat down to talk about the events of the latest season.

Jimmy Hurdstram star Jefferson White explained: “It’s an amazing opportunity to see a softer side of both of them, cause they’re both harda***s in such a different way.”

While Rip is constantly dealing with John’s dirty work on the ranch, Beth similarly takes a cold-blooded approach to her job in charge of the Duttons’ finances.

Throughout season three, however, Rip finally proved he was able to step up and fully commit himself to Beth after years of flirting and bickering.

Last year’s outing featured some of their most touching moments together, including a sweet exchange over a homemade breakfast as Beth recovers from her injuries.

Beth will be more vulnerable than ever when Yellowstone returns for its fourth season, so the tough-as-nails ranch hand may have to put aside his more violent tendencies for the time being.

Colby star Denim Richards added: “I think it’s really beautiful. I think the audience is gonna have this opportunity to see this amazing side of Rip.”

“The cooking and the attentiveness… He does have this capacity to love deeply.”

Touching on one of the most tender moments from the third season, Richards’ comments suggest Rip’s softer side could be explored even further when Yellowstone continues.

His co-star, Ian Bohen, also weighed in by praising the series for taking its time with Beth and Rip’s relationship, which arguably still hasn’t reached its full potential.

He said: “Most shows would try to put that entire cycle into one season, very easily, and it’s kind of cheap.

“We’ve lengthened it through three, and it opens up so much more time for that complexity to come through.”

Plot details for season four are still being kept under wraps, but there is certainly plenty more to delve into when it comes to Beth and Rip’s passionate and complex relationship.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in June 2021 on Paramount.
