ANDERSON Cooper has shockingly compared Donald Trump to an "awful dictator" who will "settle scores" with people who refuse to support him.
The CNN anchor's comments came in response to the US president's refusal to accept the election results and the launching of legal challenges in a number of battleground states.
Days after comparing the US president to an "obese turtle", Cooper likened Trump's reaction to the election results to the violent end of Mobutu Sese Seko's dictatorship in the Congo in the 1990s.
Speaking on CNN, Cooper said: "In the mid-90s, I think it was '96, I was in Kinshasa in the waning days of Mobutu and Mobutu was, you know, a pretty awful dictator and when he finally fled the country and the rebels were moving in to take the capital, his son drove around in a pickup truck with a machine gun and settling scores with people he felt had not been supportive enough for Mobutu."
Cooper, 53, said to the panel: "Thankfully, it hasn't come to that here but I can't believe we're in a situation where a transfer of power is not… I can't believe we are in this situation here.
"It just seems so petty. I know it's about Georgia, I know it's about setting up grievance politics that will perhaps allow him to run in four years again and give him a TV career."
The TV journalist also suggested Americans will continue to die from coronavirus if Trump continues to contest the election results.
Donald Trump Jr. responded to Cooper's shocking comments by posting a photo of the anchor on Twitter.
The image showed Cooper standing in waist-deep water during a hurricane in 2008, while the camera crew stood in water which was only up to their ankles.
It comes after Cooper slammed Trump as an "obese turtle" who is "on his back flailing in the hot sun" because his time as president is "over".
Cooper's comments came immediately after the current commander-in-chief made allegations the Democratic Party was attempting to “steal” the election from the Republicans.
The political commentator, who joined CNN in 2001, told viewers on Thursday: "That is the President of The United States. That is the most powerful person in the world.
"Yet we see him as an obese turtle on his back flailing in the hot sun realizing his time is over, but he just hasn’t accepted it.
"And he wants to take everyone down with him, including this country."
Cooper later apologised for his "heat of the moment" comments.
"I should say that I regret using those words, because that’s not the person I really want to be," Cooper said on Saturday.
"And, yeah, it was in the heat of the moment, and I regret it."
Trump's niece has claimed her uncle will be having "meltdowns upon meltdowns" following his crushing election loss to Biden.
Mary Trump, 55, an outspoken critic of her famous uncle, believes the Republican, 77, will "lash out" between now and Biden's inauguration on January 20.
Mary said her uncle will use his last remaining weeks to wield executive powers and pardon people.
She told The Observer: "He’s not going to concede, although who cares.
"What’s worse is he’s not going to engage in the normal activities that guarantee a peaceful transition.
"He’ll be having meltdowns upon meltdowns right now. He has never been in a situation like this before.
"All he’s got now is breaking stuff, and he’s going to do that with a vengeance."
Last week, Mary trolled her estranged uncle following his election defeat by tweeting a picture of herself wearing a Biden-Harris cap while holding a glass of champagne.
She captioned the photo: "To America. Thanks, guys.”
