A host of former players and managers said this was the best chance the Three Lions have had of lifting a trophy since the 1966 World Cup triumph

At least 27million watched the victory on TV and online – making the game the eighth most viewed broadcast since records began.

There is now a huge expectation that England will beat Ukraine in their quarter final on Saturday – teeing up a semi-final game in front of 60,000 fans at Wembley next Wednesday.

As the nation dared to dream, former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson told the BBC: ‘This England is like a golden generation. They cannot go out against Ukraine.

‘They will reach the semi and I think they will reach the final. I think they can go the whole way.’

Ex-England captain Alan Shearer said the Three Lions will ‘never, ever have a better opportunity to win the Euros’.

Manager Gareth Southgate had to remind his heroes they had not won the trophy after the game on Tuesday, admitting he was ‘the party pooper in the dressing room’.

But England are overwhelming favourites because they are ranked fourth in the world while Ukraine are 24th.

Rival manager Andriy Shevchenko said: ‘England are a great team, but their strength shouldn’t scare us.

‘It should motivate us because everything is possible in football, as in life.’

Boris Johnson opened Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday by saying: ‘We wish them all the best for their match against the Ukraine on Saturday and we will all be hoping against hope that this time, finally, football is coming home.’

There has been a 15 per cent increase in the booking of annual leave for July 12, the day after the final, found software company RotaCloud.
