Five dead and 50 people missing as floods destroy buildings and leave families trapped on rooftops following days of heavy rain in Germany
At least five people have died and 50 more are missing after several houses were washed away during torrential downpours in western Germany.
One of the dead was a firefighter who drowned trying to rescue people in the town of Altena, 15 miles south of Dortmund, while four more people died in Ahrweiler county, 30 miles south of Cologne.
Most of the missing were people in Ahrweiler county who had been stranded on the roofs of their homes before the buildings were swept away by floodwaters.
Sustained rain also triggered the collapse of six houses in the town of Adenau.
Another man was missing in the eastern town of Joehstadt after trying to secure his property from rising waters, authorities said.
Germany and neighbouring countries have seen heavy rain in recent days, causing widespread damage.
