A student who attends classes at John Jay College in Manhattan has tested positive for coronavirus, the university said on Tuesday night.
The woman developed symptoms over the weekend and has not returned to the campus since becoming sick, according to the City University of New York.
John Jay decided to close the school on Wednesday out of an abundance of caution.
“We will use the day tomorrow to consult further with public health and state and city officials,” read a statement from school president Karol V. Mason.
“We will contact directly the other students in her class and their instructor to make them aware and answer any questions they may have.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, there were 36 confirmed cases in New York City, and 173 statewide — the highest in the nation.
