When is the last day to vote for California recall?

CALIFORNIA'S recall election could end with the removal of Governor Gavin Newsom who took office in January 2019.

Recall efforts began back in June 2020 after Newsom's opponents gathered almost 1.5 million signatures and time is almost up for residents to cast their vote.

When is the last day to vote for California recall?

Throughout the state, all registered voters were sent ballots in the mail that have two simple questions:

  1. Do you want to recall the governor?
  2. If the governor is recalled, who do you want to replace him?

If 50% of voters answer the first question with "no" then Newsom will remain in officer until his term expires in January 2023, if not, a replacement will be chosen based off the second question.

All ballots must be casted or mailed in by September 14, 2021 in order for them to count.

California counties then have until October 14 to finish counting ballots and certify their results.

Why is Gov. Newsom being recalled?

While many believe that the Covid-19 pandemic plays a role in Newsom's recall, that is simply not the case.

The recall petition was first introduced in February 2020, before the Coronavirus became a pandemic and has to do with his handling of previous issues from immigration to homelessness to property taxes.

The petition for recall states:

"Laws he endorsed favor foreign nationals, in our country illegally, over that of our own citizens. People in this state suffer the highest taxes in the nation, the highest homelessness rates, and the lowest quality of life as a result. He has imposed sanctuary state status and fails to enforce immigration laws.

"He unilaterally over-ruled the will of the people regarding the death penalty. He seeks to impose additional burdens on our state by the following; removing the protections of Proposition 13, rationing our water use, increasing taxes and restricting parental rights."

While the Covid-19 pandemic did not start the recall efforts, Newsom's handling of it might be what saves him as the latest polls show that residents prefer he stays in office.

Can Newsom run for office again if he is recalled?

While Newsom might be recalled shortly, it does not mean he won't be able to run again.

Newsom has not publicly stated what he will do if he is recalled, but if it happens, he will be able to run for the position again in 2022.

Newsom's replacement will only be in office from October 22, 2021 to January 2023 and will have to enter the race in the the California primary that is scheduled to begin on June 7, 2022.
